Maria Godfrey Moore (1817-1853), daughter of Benjamin Godfrey and Anna Leighton, married Captain Henry D. Moore (1815-1871), son of James Moore and Mary Ann Dyer, in 1841. The Moores purchased this property under Maria’s name in 1847 from Henry Dyer Leighton (1799-1882), son of Jonathan Leighton (Sr.) and Hannah Dyer. This lot was originally part of Thomas Leighton’s land grant as lot #1.

The 50 acres sold to the Moores included land down to the shoreline leading to a shipyard operated by Henry Leighton, with rights reserved for Leighton’s continued access and usage of the shipyard.

As of 1850, the Moores resided on the property with their four children and two boarders. Just before her death, Maria transferred the property to her husband in 1853. Henry Moore married Persis Kingsley the following year, and she died shortly after that. He then married her sister, Susan Elvira Kingsley and had seven more children. Henry died in 1871, and Susan lived at the property for several decades more.

Note: The more famous Henry Dyer Moore (1842-1930) was Capt. Henry Dyer Moore’s nephew.
