119 Village Road – William N. Nash c.1850
The history of this property is difficult to trace. On the 1861 survey map and 1850 census, William N. Nash and family resided here. However, I could not trace the property’s purchase history to Nash. Nash purchased quite a bit of land from Ebenezer and Benjamin Downs in the early 1800s. He also owned half the mill privileges at the Whitten Stream Mill (1847).
The subsequent deed history of the property is challenging to interpret as several deeds in the early-to-mid 1900s seem only to grant half of the property (the front half being deeded separately from the side ell). Current real estate listings call this house the “Godfrey Goddard” house, but it does not appear that anyone by those names owned the property.
In its 2023 for-sale listing, it’s called the “Godfrey Goddard” house. I have not been able to find someone by that name, although it could be two last names – there were indeed lots of Godfreys in the area. The previous owners converted this house into a triplex. During the remodels, it lost most of its original interior architectural detail. The exterior is clapboard siding and is in excellent condition. You can view all of the real estate photos here.
As of 1861, William Nash resided here; in 1881, it was C.B. Stevens.
