Arms Proclamation 1814
By Lieutenant General Sir John Coape Sherbrooke, commanding a Body of His Britannic Majestys Land Forces and Edward Griffith Esq. Rear Admiral of the white commanding a squadron of His Majestys Ships now arrived in the Penobscot.
This is to notify unto all whom it may concern, that the municipal laws as established by the American Government, for the maintenance of Peace and Tranquility in that part of the District of Maine lying between Penobscot River and Passamaquoddy Bay will continue in force until further orders and the civil magistrates are permitted to execute the laws, as heretofore and will be supported in so doing.

The several Townships of the County of Washington are hereby authorized to assemble at their respective Towns when duly summoned by their magistrates or selectmen for the purpose of giving in an account of their arms and subscribing to the following conditions and agreement with British commanders viz.
That in consideration offering allowed by the British Commanders to retain their arms we pledge ourselves that they shall only be used for the protection of our persons and property and for the maintenance of Peace and Tranquility of the County and that they shall not be employed under any circumstances against the British Power and the Committee now at Castine from Steuben may communicate to any committees on their way better from other Townships that they on their way back to Steuben may meet.
That the permission given for assembling in their several Townships for the afore mentioned purpose applies equally to them.
