223 Village Road – Henry Clay Baker c.1866
Henry Clay Baker, carriage-maker and brother of Forbes Baker, built this house around 1866.
The land was initially settled by their grandfather, Lemuel Baker (b.1742, d.1815), and assumed to have passed to his son Eli Forbes Baker (b.1790, d.1855) (father of all of the sons).
A deed from Lemuel Sawyer outlines a property collectively purchased by George, Forbes, Henry, and Colin Baker (also 117:61-62) of 40 acres in 1866. The Forbes family established a four-home compound in that area, a blacksmith shop, and a carriage shop run by George Lemuel Baker and his brother Henry Clay Baker. Only two homes stand today (223 and 243 Village Road).
