197 Village Road – George True c.1875
On the 1881 survey map, this property is listed under “C.H. True.” It is actually George H. True (1850-1915). George sold the property to his neighbor, L.B. Sawyer, on September 17, 1878 (148:317-18) (1.5 acres with building).
George was the son of Samuel True of Litchfield, Maine. George first appeared on the 1870 Steuben census as a boarder. I have not been able to find a deed associated with True’s purchase of the land, but it would have probably been after 1875 due to his age. Since there’s no home on the property as of the 1861 survey, the estimated build date for the house is 1875.
Lauren P. Tracy (1850-1939) of Gouldsborough married Amanda Good around 1874. As of the 1880 census, Lauren and his wife resided in Township 7. At some point around 1881, they moved to Steuben (their son Herbert was born in Steuben in 1881). Unfortunately, there are no 1890 census records, so the earliest we see them at the property is in 1900.
Lauren’s son Herbert built the home next door (207 Village Road) around 1930. He left the property to Herbert upon his death and conveyed it in a 1926 deed (376:29).
The property went into foreclosure around 2010. It changed hands a lot during the mid to late 1900s. At the time of foreclosure, the house’s overall condition was very poor and stripped of original details. Real estate photos are available here. New owners have improved the property.
